The beloved sword master won’t be retiring anytime soon. Just as the last episode of its second season aired, the production of From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman (Katainaka no Ossan, Kensei ni Naru) confirmed its third season.

The announcement came with a new promotional image and a friendly video message from voice actor Hiroaki Hirata, who voices protagonist Beryl Gardenant. In the video, the seiyuu expressed excitement about continuing to play the humble instructor and joked that for the new episodes, he’d ask all characters to have internal monologues to give his throat a break.

The adaptation has maintained a steady pace since its debut in April 2025. Its second season, aired over twelve episodes during the summer of 2026, was produced by Passione and Hayabusa Film. Direction was handled by Akio Kazumi, with Kunihiko Okada writing the scripts. Character design and main animation direction were by Satsuki Hayasaka, supported by the musical composition of Yasuharu Takanashi, a team that has balanced sword fights and situational comedy.

Originally a web novel by Shigeru Sagazaki on Shosetsuka ni Naro in November 2020, the work was published in print by Square Enix with illustrations by Tetsuhiro Nabeshima, becoming a hit among fans of mature fantasy.

The story follows Beryl Gardenant, a middle-aged man who considers himself a simple old farmer with no special talent, teaching swordsmanship in a small rural dojo. Though he once dreamed of being a sword master, he feels those days are long gone. His world is turned upside down when an old student, now a prestigious imperial knight, visits to announce he’s been named special instructor for the imperial knights.
