Japanese game developer Tose has recently disclosed its consolidated financial results for the second quarter of the fiscal year concluding August 2026. As reported by GameBiz, the company has documented notable growth in the sales of console and PC-related products. This development follows nearly a year since Tose announced its strategic decision to prioritize console game development over mobile games moving forward, citing “intensifying market competition” as the driving factor.
For background, Tose stands as one of Japan’s largest independent contractors in game development. Established in 1979, the company boasts an extensive history of collaboration with major industry clients such as Nintendo, Square Enix, Bandai Namco, Capcom, and Atlus. This extensive track record has earned Tose the moniker of a “ghost developer” within the gaming sector.
According to the latest financial report, Tose’s video game business sales amounted to 3.27 billion yen (approximately $20 million USD), marking a 17.6% increase compared to the previous year. Additionally, the company reported an operating profit of 324 million yen (about $2.04 million USD), reflecting a 22.6% year-on-year rise. Specifically in the console and PC game segment, Tose experienced a 28.7% year-on-year revenue surge, reaching 2.71 billion yen (around $17 million USD). However, the company faced a 16.8% decline in mobile game sector sales, likely attributable to its strategic pivot towards console development.
With Aquaplus’s free-to-play mobile game Utawarerumono: Lost Frag, which is managed by Tose, scheduled to permanently cease operations on April 23, the company anticipates further business fluctuations in the upcoming quarter. Another challenge looming for the near term is the temporary suspension of an undisclosed project for an overseas client.
Conversely, all major projects for domestic clients are progressing as planned. Moreover, a brand-new project is currently in its initial development phase, with expectations of generating over 500 million yen in sales. Although specifics remain confidential, Tose anticipates the new game will significantly bolster its sales starting from the next fiscal year. This suggests that the enigmatic title is likely slated for release in late 2026 or the first half of 2027.
