Yoichi Miyaji, a seasoned game producer renowned for his work on the Lunar and Grandia series and former president of Game Arts, has revealed the launch of his new venture, KADATH. The studio will make its debut with Under Mythos, a dark fantasy JRPG slated for a 2028 release on PC (Steam) and Nintendo Switch.
Under Mythos follows the tale of a cat that discovers a mysterious hot spring inn after venturing into a peculiar, magical realm in search of its mother. As the feline protagonist, players will spend tranquil days tending to the mythical guests who seek solace at the inn. Yet, as the story progresses, the world begins to unravel into madness, transforming the narrative into a “cosmic horror” experience.
The gameplay alternates between dungeon exploration and hot spring inn management. Players must journey through dungeons to gather food and resources for the inn’s guests, engaging in 2D action-based combat against grotesque monsters that lurk within.
Upon returning from the dungeons, players can use their findings to enhance the hot spring inn, attracting new customers and unlocking fresh experiences. This progression unlocks new paths for further exploration.
Joining Miyaji on the project are prominent figures in Japanese game development. Character designs are by Atsuko Nishida, known for creating beloved Pokémon like Pikachu and the Charmander line. The scenario was penned by Takumi Miyajima, a veteran of the Tales of series, while the music is composed by Noriyuki Iwadare, who scored the Lunar, Grandia, and Ace Attorney games.
“The serene life of a hot spring inn, designed to soothe players, contrasts sharply with the perilous dungeons where one misstep could be fatal. After years of crafting RPGs, we’re embarking on an unpredictable hybrid JRPG that merges extremes of comfort and madness. With this exceptional team, we aim to deliver an experience that may challenge players’ perception of reality,” Miyaji shared.
Under Mythos is set to arrive on PC (Steam) and Nintendo Switch in 2028.
