Legendary Clannad creator Jun Maeda diagnosed with cancer
The legendary Key writer chose palliative care to complete his final projects.
There is no gentle way to absorb news of this magnitude. Visual Arts and Key confirmed the harsh reality facing master Jun Maeda, who was diagnosed with throat cancer. Rather than succumb or undergo destructive procedures that would prevent him from working, the mastermind behind some of the industryโs most emotional stories decided to focus on palliative care to conserve his strength and write until the very end.

The creativeโs health issues began early this year with mild discomfort in the throat area, but the pain and inflammation became much more intense during the summer. After undergoing detailed medical exams, specialists confirmed a diagnosis of pharyngeal cancer. After carefully evaluating his situation and the available treatments, the writer chose not to undergo invasive therapies and opted for palliative care to manage symptoms, maintain his quality of life, and focus on what he loves: composing and writing.
Currently, the creative is hospitalized, but the company noted that he remains determined to dedicate every available day to his projects. Regarding the mobile game Heaven Burns Red, Maeda completed the main story under his responsibility up to the first half of the sixth chapter, also finalizing all key narrative outlines that will take the plot to the conclusion of this final installment. He also completed the lyrics and musical compositions for this stage, so his recovery progress will determine if he can participate in the remaining segments.

Alongside his game work, the composer had plans for an original music project for YouTube in the long term. Upon learning of his diagnosis and aware of the limited time, he decided to accelerate the process to finish the songs in development as soon as possible and deliver them to his listeners. Additionally, the company set up a postal address to receive support letters from fans, clarifying that they will not accept gifts or packages but guaranteeing that each message will reach him directly at the hospital.

Jun Maeda is a legendary Japanese writer, scriptwriter, and composer born in 1975, considered one of the most influential figures in the visual novel and dramatic animation genre. As co-founder of the Key studio within Visual Arts, he revolutionized the mediumโs storytelling by creating iconic works such as Kanon, Air, Clannad, and Little Busters!, famous for addressing pain, loss, and personal overcoming with unique sensitivity.
In television, Maeda wrote and composed music for hugely impactful animated productions like Angel Beats!, Charlotte, and The Day I Became a God. This is not the first time the creative has faced a tough medical battle, as in 2016 he was hospitalized for five months due to idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy that weakened his heart, a condition that eventually required a transplant. Despite constant health challenges, his musical and narrative legacy remains an unforgettable pillar for the community.
