Japan’s enduring television series, Game Center CX, which centers on classic video games, revealed during an August 23rd livestream that it will begin incorporating PS3 and Wii titles into its episodes moving forward.

Launched in 2003, Game Center CX (known internationally as Retro Game Master) features comedian Shinya Arino as he attempts to complete a designated retro game within a single day. The format mirrors modern Let’s Play videos and live streams, with Arino and his co-hosts offering humorous commentary during gameplay. While the show traditionally showcases games from the ‘80s and ‘90s, it has recently broadened its scope to include PS2 titles. The inclusion of Wii and PS3 games—both consoles celebrating their 20th anniversary this year—had been a topic of discussion among the production team.

The livestream, hosted on the show’s YouTube channel, included a viewer poll on whether Wii and PS3 games should be featured, alongside clips of Arino and a co-host debating the merits and drawbacks of the idea. The poll garnered over 14,000 votes, with 71% supporting the addition of seventh-generation console games. Approximately 13% opposed the notion, while the remaining 16% were indifferent.

Supporters of the proposal highlighted the age and nostalgic value of these games for younger audiences, whereas critics argued that the typical length of seventh-generation titles would not fit the show’s structure, and their advanced graphics might blur the line between retro and modern gaming.

After the initial poll, Arino tested several notable games from both consoles, such as New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Wii Fit, and Demon’s Souls. A subsequent poll collected around 17,000 votes, with support climbing to 80%.

Ultimately, Arino made the decision to include games from both consoles in future episodes of Game Center CX. He cited their appeal to newer fans in their teens and twenties as the key factor.

Following the broadcast, Arino shared the news on his X account and his blog, announcing that PS3 and Wii had “joined the retro family.”
