Kirito returns: Sword Art Online anime to debut new movie in 2028
Reki Kawahara writes this original story that will continue the events of the Alicization arc.
The production committee behind the ever-popular Sword Art Online franchise finally revealed details of the mysterious cinematic project they had been hinting at since the 10th anniversary event in 2022. This new ambitious venture to the big screen is officially titled Sword Art Online -Integral Domain-, with its definitive premiere in Japanese cinemas set for 2028. The main hook of this original feature film is that its plot is positioned chronologically right after the chaotic events of the Alicization narrative arc, directly expanding the series’ canon.

To ensure the technical aspects meet the high expectations of a cinematic release, the animation production is handled by the solid duo of A-1 Pictures and Psyde Kick Studio. The general director’s chair was taken by veteran Shingo Adachi, a key figure in the franchise’s history who served as chief animation director during the early seasons. The visual aesthetic and character design fall to the talent of Yumiko Yamamoto, while the original work’s creator, Reki Kawahara, took full responsibility for writing this new story for the film, which will be distributed by Animec.
Voice Cast
- Yoshitsugu Matsuoka (Inosuke Hashibira in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba) as Kirito.
- Haruka Tomatsu (Zero Two in Darling in the Franxx) as Asuna.
Aincrad’s literary legacy remains intact
It’s fascinating to see how the popularity of this virtual reality universe refuses to slow down. Born as a self-published web novel in 2001 and formalized under the Dengeki Bunko label of publisher Kadokawa in 2009, the light novel is nearing thirty printed volumes thanks to new stages like Moon Cradle and Unital Ring. And to make the four-year wait for the movie’s release more bearable, players can return to this universe with the release of Echoes of Aincrad, a new action RPG coming to modern platforms this July.
Considering the immense development time this movie will have under A-1 Pictures, do you think Kawahara’s original story will match the stunning visual quality we saw in the climax of Alicization?
