Two popular VTubers cancel virtual wedding after heavy criticism

The VTubers canceled their virtual wedding broadcast and offered public apologies.

Virtual entertainment once again became the center of intense controversy where the boundaries between thematic content and sensitive social issues clashed head-on. The well-known independent VTubers Meimei Himari and Kasukabe Tsukushi surprised by announcing the complete withdrawal of their “virtual wedding” project and the immediate cancellation of the live event, issuing public apologies for not considering the gravity and social reality surrounding same-sex marriage.

It all began on August 18, when both content creators posted coordinated messages announcing their supposed “marriage” and the staging of a special broadcast scheduled for the following night. The event promised to include a simulated marriage registration, exchange of vows, commemorative videos, and guest messages. Although the creators clarified from the start that it was not a legal union in the real world but a thematic production for their audience, the approach generated a flood of divided comments and accusations on digital platforms.

Following the wave of responses received, on August 19 both talents decided to backtrack and definitively cancel the broadcast. In separate official statements, Meimei Himari and Kasukabe Tsukushi admitted their lack of consideration for using such a significant institution as entertainment material. Kasukabe Tsukushi openly acknowledged that in real society, many people fight daily for the recognition of same-sex marriage and suffer from the lack of legal rights in Japan, making it a lack of sensitivity that they deeply regret.

With the official retraction of their marriage announcement, both creators—whose years of experience and multiple prior collaborations—seek to move past the incident after offering apologies to their followers and those who felt affected. Considering that same-sex marriage remains an unresolved debate in Japanese society, do you think the creators acted correctly by canceling the event to avoid trivializing a real social cause?
