Buying figures and collectibles to forget adult life problems is common in the otaku community, but filling the shopping cart recklessly and never paying the bills led one fan directly to jail. Authorities in Osaka announced on August 6 the arrest of Mayu Yoshida, a 32-year-old employee accused of commercial obstruction after systematically making and canceling thousands of massive orders at the Jump Characters Store, the official store operated by publishing giant Shueisha.

The level of dedication this woman invested in her fraud is truly alarming. According to the police report, the accused used 238 different accounts to place over 2,000 orders for merchandise from exclusive franchises like One Piece and NARUTO, between July 2024 and May 2025. The total value of the items she illicitly set aside exceeded 4.3 billion yen. Her modus operandi involved abusing Japanese payment facilities: she chose the convenience store deposit option and let the deadline expire for the system to cancel the order, or worse, requested cash-on-delivery and simply refused the packages when the delivery person arrived at her door.

Although Yoshida did not take any products to her home, her peculiar hobby cost Shueisha around 7.5 million yen in wasted shipping costs and storage fees, in addition to temporarily depleting inventory and preventing true collectors from purchasing their items. Cornered, the woman admitted to the charges, insisting she held no grudge against the company. Her only excuse was that she liked seeing anime items and that the simple adrenaline of placing an order before it sold out gave her immense satisfaction, helping her cope with work stress.
