Ring Fit Adventure, launched in 2019 for the Nintendo Switch, has sparked claims from researchers suggesting its potential benefits extend beyond physical fitness to mental well-being. Kexin Huang and Lei Song, researchers from Jilin University in China, conducted a controlled study to assess the impact of Ring Fit Adventure on individuals experiencing ‘subthreshold depression’—those exhibiting depressive symptoms without a formal diagnosis of major depressive disorder. Previous studies had indicated that consistent exercise could be beneficial, yet maintaining adherence to workout routines remained a challenge.

This challenge prompted the Jilin University research team to investigate Ring Fit Adventure, a game that integrates physical activity into gameplay. The trial examined the game’s effects on subthreshold depression, tracking participants’ sleep quality and depressive symptoms before and after participating in semi-regular play sessions over an 8-week period.

The study enrolled 84 participants, all diagnosed with subthreshold depression, recruited from three universities in northeastern China. Half of the group followed a structured regimen involving 50 to 60 minutes of Ring Fit Adventure play, two to three times per week, for eight weeks. The remaining 42 participants served as the control group, continuing with their usual daily routines.

After 16 weeks, the results revealed a notable reduction in depressive symptoms and improved sleep quality among participants who played Ring Fit Adventure. Although the study did not conclusively determine the game’s effectiveness in alleviating anxiety, the data suggested that participants experienced enhancements in their overall quality of life.

Interviews with the intervention group highlighted that the game’s unique role-playing elements, such as exercise routines tied to defeating in-game enemies and character progression, played a significant role in motivating players to stay engaged. Based on these findings, the research team concluded that Ring Fit Adventure and similar games serve as effective and accessible tools for early mental health support in practical settings.

However, some participants suggested that external factors may have influenced their perceived improvements in quality of life. They noted that the controlled lab environment, where they were shielded from weather concerns and could exercise without disturbance, may have contributed to their positive experiences. Additionally, the regular reminders from lab staff about their exercise regimen were cited as a motivating factor.

The researchers acknowledge the need for further investigation into the game’s effects in less controlled environments, such as home-based play. Future studies may also explore its impact across different age groups and over varying durations to validate similar outcomes.

It’s worth mentioning that Ring Fit Adventure’s influence on physical health has also been a subject of scientific interest. For instance, a team at Chiba University in 2021 examined the game as a potential solution for chronic back pain, further supporting the idea that fitness games can effectively encourage daily exercise.
