Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember producer Masakazu Hirayama recently sat down with a Chinese outlet during Koei Tecmo’s ChinaJoy 2026 demo exhibit. During the conversation, he shed light on the combat mechanics and gameplay evolution planned for the upcoming action RPG sequel.

The foundation of Wo Long’s gameplay draws inspiration from Chinese martial arts, emphasizing fluid attacks and the seamless interchange between offense and defense—contrasting with Nioh’s approach of motion versus stillness. While the first game aimed to capture the essence of Nioh while making it more approachable, the sequel is set to introduce a “multi-dimensional combat system” that offers enhanced verticality compared to its predecessor.

Hirayama explained that Wo Long 2 leverages Team Ninja’s extensive experience and feedback from their other action titles, with a particular focus on three-dimensionality inspired by Ninja Gaiden 4 (whose development partially overlapped with Wo Long 2). This includes new aerial combat mechanics, wall-running abilities, and environments designed to encourage vertical exploration (the producer assured players that there won’t be harsh penalties for falling).

The producer also addressed the criticism directed at the original Wo Long for its reliance on the “Deflect” mechanic, which sometimes led to repetitive gameplay. To address this, Wo Long 2 introduces a new core mechanic that discourages players from overusing Deflection, instead offering a broader array of proactive combat options.

In terms of world design, Wo Long 2 transitions from a linear structure to an open-world map that portrays a vast, interconnected battlefield. Actions in one region will impact the overall battle and alter other parts of the map, a design choice aimed at avoiding the monotony often associated with open-world games. This shift will also lead to a reimagining of Wo Long’s Morale system, though specific details remain undisclosed.

The sequel will retain multi-boss battles similar to the original, but Hirayama noted that significant improvements have been made to the boss AI. Additionally, issues like off-screen attacks that could lead to frustrating deaths have been addressed.

Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember is slated for an early 2027 release on PC (Steam), PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S. The game will also be available through Xbox Game Pass.
