The Anime Expo panels continue to deliver heavyweight revelations for the industry. The production committee behind the animated adaptation of The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t A Guy at All (known in its original language as Kininatteru Hito ga Otoko ja Nakatta) used the Crunchyroll stage to release its first promotional video. The trailer showcased its distinctive aesthetic and musical theme, officially confirming that this yuri romance gem will air on television in January 2027.

CloverWorks and a Historic Musical License
To ensure the adaptation captures the work’s visual essence, the renowned studio CloverWorks took full control of the animation. The director’s chair is occupied by the experienced Masashi Ishihama, working alongside Rino Yamazaki on script structuring. The spectacular artwork of the source material was adapted by the talented Kanna Hirayama in character design. But the committee’s masterstroke was in the sound: the iconic track “Breed” by the American band Nirvana will be used as the official opening theme, an extremely rare and costly luxury in the anime world.
Voice Cast
- Mariya Ise (Killua Zoldyck in Hunter x Hunter) as Mitsuki Koga.
- Akari Kitou (Nezuko Kamado in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba) as Aya Oosawa.
A Success Forged Entirely Online
It’s worth noting that this original manga didn’t need massive print magazines to shine from day one. Its creator, Sumiko Arai, began publishing chapters directly on social media in April 2022. The organic traction was so massive that publisher Kadokawa quickly intervened to serialize and publish it physically, reaching impressive 1.4 million copies in circulation today. With awards like the top spot in the Tsugi ni Kuru Manga Awards of 2023, the unique story about a high school student falling deeply in love with a mysterious record store clerk (without knowing she’s actually her classmate) is guaranteed success.
Do you think the high cost of licensing Western tracks like Nirvana’s will be worth it to enhance the series’ atmosphere?
