Suffering never ends when descending the most dangerous pit in the anime world. To the joy (and terror) of the community, the production committee behind Made in Abyss has released an impressive promotional trailer for its new film, titled Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery. The trailer confirmed that the film will premiere in Japanese cinemas on October 23, and also gave us a preview of the theme song “Chain of the Abyss,” composed by the brilliant Kevin Penkin and performed by popular VTuber Mori Calliope.

This new cinematic installment is not just a recap or alternate story, but a direct continuation of the emotional events from the second TV season, The Golden City of the Scorching Sun. With this project, studio Kinema Citrus and director Masayuki Kojima are launching a new series of films adapting the next arcs of Akihito Tsukushi’s manga. The franchise continues to prove that behind its cute and deceptive character design lies one of the most cruel, graphic, and fascinating narratives in all of anime.
