The release of 2025’s Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter saw Nihon Falcom delight fans with a simultaneous global debut on Steam, Switch, and PS5. Reflecting on the positive reception this generated, studio head Toshihiro Kondo has expressed his intent to continue pursuing multiplatform launches wherever possible moving forward.
In a recent interview with ASCII Japan ahead of the upcoming Trails In The Sky 2nd Chapter, Kondo explained that the new remake series was instrumental in shaping the studio’s multiplatform strategy. “Previously, the Trails series was primarily released on PS5, but with Trails in the Sky, we took the initiative to coordinate our own worldwide launches across platforms like Switch and PC (Steam),” he noted.
Kondo did acknowledge that this approach was facilitated by the fact that the games’ storylines were largely complete early in development. In contrast, new titles often involve last-minute adjustments that can complicate multiplatform planning. Nevertheless, Nihon Falcom achieved “outstanding results” through this method, and Kondo confirmed that the studio’s “standard practice will be to ultimately release our games worldwide across a sensible selection of platforms.”

Kondo also highlighted that Switch and PC platforms have been key in attracting new players to Nihon Falcom’s games. “To ensure our series remains vibrant for years to come, we must continue releasing titles on these platforms and work diligently on expanding our reach,” he stated. By consistently developing for new systems, Kondo believes the studio can keep drawing in players—even for established franchises like Trails—and thereby sustain an environment conducive to ongoing game development.
