The outcomes of the Touhou Project Popularity Poll 2026 have been revealed, sparking astonishment among the Japanese community on X. The annual Touhou Project Popularity Poll, initiated in 2003, has consistently tracked fans’ preferred characters and musical selections over the years, offering insights into fan demographics. What makes this year’s findings particularly noteworthy is the revelation that nearly 40% of the over 43,000 participants fell within the 15 to 19 age range—indicating that the Touhou fanbase remains predominantly youthful.

Debuting with Highly Responsive to Prayers in 1997, the Touhou series has evolved into a cult favorite among otaku circles and a cornerstone of internet culture over nearly three decades. Despite its association with the earlier eras of the internet, the franchise has successfully sustained a devoted following, largely comprising individuals under 30 years old.

The Touhou Project Popularity Poll 2026’s participant questionnaire gathered information on the age, gender, and location of the respondents, as well as their initial exposure to and history with the series. In terms of age distribution, 38.17% of participants (43,453 individuals who provided answers) were aged 15 to 19, followed by the 20 to 24 age group at 24.90%, and the 10 to 14 age group at 13.59%. Only the 25 to 29 age bracket achieved double-digit representation, accounting for 10.75% of the total votes.

The results from three years prior, despite involving fewer participants, mirrored these findings, suggesting that Touhou has consistently retained its appeal as a franchise that resonates with younger audiences. While many long-time fans are delighted to see teenagers and young adults engaging with the community, some express surprise at the demographic shift.

“The Touhou fans from the past are now over 30, yet in today’s fanbase, those in their 30s constitute only about 10% of the community. In essence, they’ve nearly vanished […] I understand that those who discovered Touhou during the Niconico era might find it hard to believe, but high school students are now the primary audience. There are even young children attending events with their parents, and many foreigners are involved,” one user remarked. Conversely, some argue that older fans may still be present, suggesting they haven’t abandoned Touhou but simply don’t participate in community activities like polls. Nevertheless, the substantial youth demographic within Touhou’s fanbase is undeniable.

The key to Touhou’s enduring popularity among teenagers appears to be YouTube. In response to the question “How did you become acquainted with Touhou,” 42.69% of over 17,000 respondents cited YouTube as their introduction to the series—particularly through “Yukkuri” commentary videos featuring Reimu and Marisa, as well as numerous Touhou-themed Minecraft videos, which are popular among Japanese children. Notably, word of mouth was the second most frequent response, with over 15.5% of participants discovering Touhou through school, club activities, and other personal connections.
