Square Enix hosted an official livestream spotlighting Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United on September 12. The event featured producer Shinichi Tatsuke alongside voice actors Junya Enoki, who lends his voice to Julian Nohl, and Asami Seto, who voices Katarina Lauran in the Japanese version. The broadcast showcased early gameplay footage and provided insights into what players can anticipate from this remake, addressing queries that long-time SaGa enthusiasts might have.
Among the subjects Tatsuke addressed was the removal of the original game’s “Commander Mode” and how the playable character Sarah will be managed due to this alteration. Please be aware that this article contains minor spoilers for both the original Romancing SaGa 3 and the new Destinies United remake.
Similar to the original 1995 release, the remake of Romancing SaGa 3 offers eight protagonists for players to select from to kick off their adventure. The narrative’s progression varies based on player decisions, such as which protagonist’s story they start with and the sequence in which they confront The Four Sinistrals. Three difficulty settings are available: Casual, Normal, and Classic, with the Classic mode designed to replicate the original game’s high difficulty level.

During the livestream, Tatsuke confirmed that Destinies United will not include the original game’s Commander Mode. This unique mode allowed the protagonist to remain out of direct combat, instead issuing commands to other party members from the backrow. Commander Mode provided powerful features such as the ability to change formations mid-battle, recover HP each turn, and utilize Formation Skills, making it a formidable system once mastered.
Tatsuke explained that the development team opted against including Commander Mode in the remake due to the significant development costs associated with creating and balancing a separate combat system alongside the standard one, as well as time constraints from the development schedule. The team’s focus is instead on enhancing the overall quality of the game, including the standard battle system.
A natural question arising from this change is what becomes of Sarah. As the developers explained during the livestream, in the original Romancing SaGa 3, if players choose Sarah as their protagonist, she eventually reaches a point where she can no longer participate in a “certain important battle.” The battle then transitions to Commander Mode, with the remaining party members fighting without her. This often left players who were unfamiliar with the mechanic in a difficult situation.
In the remake, the absence of Commander Mode means that if Sarah is the protagonist, she will be able to participate in this battle as normal. Tatsuke mentioned that the situation will be resolved through “the power of a miracle.” This decision appears to have been made only after extensive discussion within the development team, as it also ties into the game’s worldbuilding. The team also consulted Akitoshi Kawazu, the original game’s director, before finalizing it.

Following the announcement of Destinies United, veteran players had been making lighthearted posts suggesting that newcomers select Sarah as their first protagonist. While these were clearly playful antics from fans of the original game, Tatsuke addressed this by stating that players can now “safely choose Sarah as their protagonist.”
Additionally, it’s worth noting that while the original game had certain characters who could not be recruited depending on the protagonist chosen, the remake will apparently allow players to recruit all characters regardless of their initial protagonist selection.
The livestream also touched on several other minor details, but according to a post by Kawazu on X, the team seems to be intentionally limiting the amount of information revealed about the game at this stage. This suggests there may be more intriguing revelations still to come in the near future.
