Correction: A previous version of this piece stated that “the developers claimed the game was 99% complete,” but SEGA has since confirmed this was due to a misinterpretation during the live presentation. The developers intended to convey that they cannot discuss 99% of the game’s content at this time. The headline and main text have been updated accordingly.

SEGA hosted a special “Funtime SHOW” event at Tokyo Game Show 2026, which featured a segment dedicated to Lollipop Chainsaw 2 Back2Back, a fresh zombie action title from Dragami Games.

Set to debut in 2027 on PlayStation 5, Back2Back represents the latest installment in the Lollipop Chainsaw franchise, following the original 2012 zombie action game and its 2024 remastered version, Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP. In Lollipop Chainsaw 2 Back2Back, players will once again control Juliet, the series’ heroine, as she wields her trusty chainsaw to decimate waves of zombies. Juliet will don a fresh outfit and is said to possess even greater power than before. Her boyfriend Nick returns in his signature severed head form.

The development of Back2Back is a joint effort between Dragami Games, NADA HOLDINGS, a Taiwanese IP investment and development firm, and JP UNIVERSE, a development studio headed by Hajime Tabata, who has previously worked on the Final Fantasy series and other Square Enix projects. Masahiro Yuki, the scenario writer for the original Lollipop Chainsaw, and character designer NekoshowguN are also contributing to the project.

During the Tokyo Game Show 2026 stage presentation, Dragami Games President and CEO Shohei Sato joined NADA HOLDINGS founder and CEO Joe Teng, JP UNIVERSE’s Hajime Tabata, and development director Yasuaki Nasu to discuss the game’s development.

The team disclosed that the Back2Back project was spearheaded by NADA HOLDINGS. Joe Teng, a self-proclaimed fan of Lollipop Chainsaw, reportedly approached Dragami Games in 2022 following the announcement of the Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP remaster, proposing a sequel. This interaction marked the beginning of the project.

While specific gameplay details remain under wraps, the event showcased gameplay footage rendered in Unreal Engine and highlighted three “key pillars” of the project. The first pillar is “characters,” with the developers aiming to elevate protagonist Juliet from a “star to a superstar” among the zombie masses. They also noted their efforts to give her a universally appealing appearance to attract new players.

The second pillar is the game’s “cute yet chaotic world.” The original game blended pop culture, cuteness, kitsch, and style against a horror backdrop. The sequel intends to amplify these elements to an even more “over-the-top” degree. The developers also hinted at expanding upon the world established in the first game. The final pillar is “thrilling action,” with the team focusing on delivering satisfying and intuitive combat mechanics while ensuring Juliet remains visually striking during battles.

The developers confirmed they have yet to reveal 99% of the game’s content. A trailer was presented at the event, though the footage was deliberately toned down. The developers stated they plan to gradually unveil the game’s more “extreme” aspects moving forward.

Lollipop Chainsaw 2 Back2Back is slated for release on PS5 in 2027.
