Bandai Namco Filmworks has revealed that the Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO anime feature will arrive in North American cinemas in February 2027, following its debut in Japan the previous month. The announcement came with a new trailer and the launch of an official website.
Chiaki Morosawa, the late screenwriter who passed away in 2016, penned the film’s screenplay. Her husband and the film’s director, Mitsuo Fukuda, described it as “the final project my late wife, series composition writer Chiaki Morosawa, completed the script for,” noting that it was crafted “with twenty years of emotion invested in it” (source: Oricon).
Fukuda shared that he had nearly lost hope of the project ever being realized, believing it would likely remain shelved. However, with the support of fans, the team managed to bring the story to fruition. He expressed his hope that viewers would appreciate the narrative bridging Mobile Suit Gundam SEED DESTINY and Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM, as well as the emotional depth the characters carry, which Morosawa was determined to convey.
This new film serves as a prequel to Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM, which premiered on January 26, 2024. It adapts a scenario developed during the planning stages of the 2024 film by series composition writer Morosawa, co-writer Shigeru Morita, and director Mitsuo Fukuda, focusing on protagonist Shinn Asuka.
Following the collapse of the Destiny Plan proposed by Dullindal—a scheme that would have determined people’s lives based on genetics—Cagalli, the chief representative of the Orb United Emirates, works to establish a peaceful new era by creating a global peace monitoring agency called COMPS (Compass).
In C.E.74, though the great war has ended, Shinn remains uncertain about his path forward. Suddenly, a mobile suit that has endured numerous past conflicts is transferred from ZAFT to COMPS’s temporary base on Onogoro Island. That night, however, the Strike Freedom Gundam is stolen by unknown parties. To prevent the situation from worsening, recover the stolen machine, and protect everything they hold dear, Shinn and his allies once again engage in combat.
Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Freedom Zero is scheduled to debut in North America in February 2027.
