Netflix dethrones Crunchyroll as the world’s top anime platform

A global report confirms that the red N surpassed the orange platform in most international markets.

Netflix dethrones Crunchyroll as the world's top anime platform

For years we swore that Crunchyroll was the absolute and untouchable king of Japanese animation. It was the ultimate otaku paradise. False. The game rules have just changed drastically. A massive new report confirmed that Netflix has just given the orange platform a slap, snatching the crown as the most popular service for watching anime outside of Asia.

The strategy that shattered the monopoly

The bomb was dropped by GEM Partners in its 2026 global anime white paper. They surveyed thousands of people in fifteen countries and the numbers are deadly: the big red N is the number one platform in seven of the nine key markets surveyed. And the big question is, how did they achieve this with a much smaller anime catalog? The answer lies in the casual audience. Netflix doesn’t aim to have every series from the season, just the right ones. Exclusive gems like Cyberpunk Edgerunners or Devilman Crybaby captured millions of viewers who would never pay a subscription dedicated 100% to animation.

In fact, Netflix executives had already boasted that more than half of their global subscribers consume this format. They have a monstrous reach. While Crunchyroll remains the home for die-hard fans seeking simulcasts and endless libraries, Netflix’s algorithm successfully introduced anime to the general public.

The price of streaming competition

We also cannot ignore the economic context and recent corporate decisions. Just recently, Crunchyroll confirmed price increases and promised to add video games to justify the blow to the wallet. The catch is that Netflix has been offering mobile games since 2021, giving it a huge competitive advantage. The study also revealed interesting data about our global tastes: while Japan has its own cult phenomena, commercial titans like Jujutsu Kaisen and Naruto continue to dominate Western screens overwhelmingly.

By the way, the orange platform remains comfortably in the global top 10, proving that its base community is die-hard loyal. But the streaming platform war is more aggressive than ever and the absolute dominance of a single site is over. Knowing that prices keep rising, do you stick with Crunchyroll’s immense library or prefer Netflix’s convenience and exclusives?
