Hollywood recognizes anime: Witch Hat Atelier and Steel Ball Run nominated for Astra Awards
Hollywood’s prestigious critic organization revealed its list of nominees for the best anime of the year, highlighting the incredible visual and voice acting talent in Japanese animation.
The international recognition of Japanese animation continues to break barriers in the U.S. entertainment industry. Yesterday, the Hollywood Creative Alliance officially announced the nominees for the upcoming Astra TV Awards 2026. Among the various categories celebrating the best of television, the award for Best Anime Series has become a major focus. This year’s list includes heavyweights that have dominated conversations in recent months, such as Sakamoto Days, Dandelion, MAO, Rooster Fighter, the highly anticipated seventh part Steel Ball Run: JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, and the acclaimed magical adaptation Witch Hat Atelier.

A victory for voice acting
In addition to competing for the top award, Witch Hat Atelier stood out individually thanks to its excellent dubbing talent. Actress Anjali Kunapaneni received a well-deserved nomination for voicing protagonist Coco, while Joshua Waters will also compete for his portrayal of master Qifrey. Meanwhile, the irreverent and original Rooster Fighter didn’t fall short, earning a nomination for Patrick Seitz for his acting work. This level of recognition shows that international critics are paying close attention to the technical details of each production, solidifying a category that in past editions crowned hits like Dragon Ball Daima and even awarded honorary prizes to cinematic productions like Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle.

The big night for animation
The awards ceremony is scheduled for August 15th in Los Angeles. With a voting board composed of journalists, actors, producers, and other industry professionals, these awards have positioned themselves as an excellent gauge of the cultural impact Asian series have in the West. For fans of these franchises, seeing their favorite characters sharing the spotlight with Hollywood’s blockbuster productions is undeniable proof that the medium has moved beyond a niche market to become a global phenomenon of absolute prestige.

With this year’s competition featuring highly anticipated manga adaptations and works shining for their immense visual quality, which of these incredible productions do you think will take home the Best Anime Series trophy, or do you believe the jury overlooked another important title in this list of nominees?
