At a developer panel during Tokyo Game Show 2026, it was disclosed that the inspiration behind The Apothecary Diaries: The False Imperial Brother stemmed from Toho’s proposal to craft “an RPG inspired by the Atelier series.” Building on this foundation, Koei Tecmo’s Gust studio brought to life the forthcoming mystery adventure game.
Toho producer Takayuki Onishi revealed that at one point, the development of an Apothecary Diaries game hit a roadblock. After several unsuccessful concepts, he pitched the idea of “Atelier Maomao” – an Apothecary Diaries title with Atelier RPG elements – to Gust executive producer Junso Hosoi. The proposal was met with swift approval, marking the start of the game’s creation.
The Apothecary Diaries: The False Imperial Brother incorporates aspects of the Atelier series while shifting focus to unraveling five connected mysteries and curses afflicting the Royal Capital. As Maomao, players gather clues through exploration and conversations. By presenting collected evidence, players engage in dialogues that build credibility, gradually uncovering the truth behind the enigmas.
The game adapts the Atelier series’ synthesis mechanic, enabling players to craft remedies using medicinal herbs and ingredients discovered across the game world. The quality and diversity of ingredients influence the complexity of crafting minigames as well as the strength of the resulting medicines. For those preferring to concentrate on the mystery-solving, an auto-crafting feature allows medicines to be created automatically from inventory items.
In a Push Square interview, Onishi observed that the atmosphere and target audience of the Atelier series have evolved over time, noting the shift from an initial female fanbase to a predominantly male one in later titles. Nevertheless, he anticipates that female fans who appreciated Atelier Marie: The Alchemist of Salburg (the series’ debut title) will find enjoyment in The False Imperial Brother.
With an original narrative concept by series creator Hyuganatsu, The Apothecary Diaries: The False Imperial Brother is slated for an Early 2027 release on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 1 and 2, and PC (Steam).
