During an interview featured on the official Koei Tecmo app on September 16 (read the web excerpt here), the creators of Atelier Karia: The Night Kingdom & the Guide of Memories provided an update on the game’s controversial “body shape changing mechanic,” which sparked intense debate after an unusual player survey from Gust. Although the positive “interim” findings from last month’s poll had already hinted at this, it’s now confirmed that the mechanic is being developed and will be ready by launch.
Atelier Karia represents the latest installment in the enduring alchemy-focused Atelier JRPG franchise, slated for a February 25 release on Steam, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. The game’s protagonist, Karia, possesses a remarkable talent for consuming virtually anything—from everyday food to crafting materials, and even weapons and explosives. The items Karia ingests during her adventures and battles can modify both her appearance and skills, with over 100 distinct transformations tied to her snacking habits.
Recognizing that eating serves as a central gameplay element, the developers of Atelier Karia sought player input on whether they would embrace the idea of Karia transforming into a more “plump” version of herself after indulging heavily, leading to last month’s widely discussed user poll.

In the latest interview, producer Junzo Hosoi and director Daiki Fukui revealed they were taken aback by the massive support for the feature, with nearly 75% of fans strongly advocating for its inclusion. Among English-speaking communities, this figure climbed to 90%. The survey spanned Asia, North America, and Europe, with Hosoi noting that all regions expressed approval, though North America’s enthusiasm was particularly pronounced.
Fukui added that the development team had prepared for various outcomes when designing the survey and had already laid the groundwork for implementation. While he didn’t explicitly confirm a final decision on Karia’s body shape changes, his remarks suggest the feature is actively being developed, with the team working diligently. According to Fukui, despite the technical challenges, the work won’t significantly delay the project, so fans can rest assured.

Meanwhile, the interim survey results indicated that among those who favored body shape changes, 62% wanted the ability to lock Karia into a preferred form, while 32% preferred spontaneous shifts based on her consumption. The developers haven’t yet announced their stance on this, so further details may follow.
Atelier Karia: The Night Kingdom & the Guide of Memories is scheduled for an Early 2027 release on PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
