The Ver 2.5 update for SmileBoom’s RPG Developer Bakin tool, which rolled out on June 17th, introduced a major new feature: support for Live2D character animation. This digital animation style is widely recognized for its use in VTuber content and mobile games such as Emberstoria or Azur Lane.
Launched in 2025, RPG Developer Bakin is a game development tool designed to empower aspiring creators to realize their ideas without requiring any programming knowledge, as stated in its promotional slogan. The tool boasts an advanced map editor that supports elevation changes and unique visual effects, highly customizable screen layouts, compatibility with complex battle systems and scripted cutscenes, and a vast library of pre-made assets to assist new developers.
Since its initial release, the software has undergone multiple updates, including the addition of enemy parties and crafting system support. Behind-the-scenes enhancements, such as improved debugging tools, have also been implemented over time.
This latest update allows users to import and utilize rigged character models created with Live2D Cubism, the industry-standard program for Live2D animations, within games developed using RPG Developer Bakin. While Live2D models employed by VTubers are typically controlled in real-time via motion-capture software like VTube Studio, they can also be programmed with pre-set animations, which is likely the intended application in this context.

According to the update notes, “By bringing characters to life with Live2D, creators can produce more engaging and memorable experiences that leave a lasting impression on players.” While the implementation is left to the discretion of game developers, examining the types of games created by doujin developers using similar tools like RPG Maker on Steam can provide insight into potential applications.
The Ver. 2.5 update for Bakin also introduces additional features, such as the ability to customize the player’s mouse pointer and a streamlined shader management system. Furthermore, a “Beginner Tutorial” has been added, which can be accessed directly from the program interface and is designed to guide new users through Bakin’s capabilities.
RPG Developer Bakin is currently available on Steam.
