In a sudden live announcement on July 29, the creators of the bold Korean gacha RPG Brown Dust 2 revealed that the game’s local version would face censorship and content adjustments starting July 30. Game director Jun-hee Lee confirmed that two specific outfits, Palette’s Shattered Dream and Olivier’s Retired Legend, would be altered to align with South Korea’s censorship regulations and review standards. Additionally, the game will now feature a distinct version for the domestic market.
Modifications will be applied to certain cutscenes and visuals related to these outfits, with further censorship for Olivier’s secret event (where the character is shown retrieving her weapon from an inappropriate location). Lee explained that portrayals of genitalia, related bodily fluids, and suggestive actions were deemed violations of South Korean censorship laws (despite the game already holding a 19+ rating locally).
As a gesture of goodwill, all players will receive 4,000 Diamonds, the game’s premium currency, with owners of the affected costumes getting an additional 2,000 Diamonds per item. Those seeking refunds will be granted 13,400 Diamonds per costume. For players who own both costumes and have enhanced them beyond +5, a full refund will include 160,800 Diamonds plus the materials used for upgrades.
This is the second instance where Brown Dust 2 developers have tailored the game to a specific region, with Germany being the initial case. Going forward, all new content for the Korean version will adhere to local censorship laws, while other regions will keep the original costumes and uncensored material.
As the game’s country of origin, Lee expressed disappointment that Brown Dust 2 had to be censored domestically. Although the development team explored alternatives like different service providers, they ultimately chose to comply with South Korean regulations to avoid pulling the game from the market (similar to what happened in Vietnam). Faced with this dilemma, Lee and his team opted for a separate version to preserve their Korean player base.
