In July, Spike Chunsoft revealed that Danganronpa 2×2, an enhanced remake of Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, had been rescheduled from a 2026 launch to 2027. During a recent Crunchyroll discussion, producer Shohei Sakakibara and series architect Kazutaka Kodaka delved into the rationale behind the postponement, citing the impending release of Grand Theft Auto VI as a key factor.
Sakakibara explained that the delay would grant the development team additional time to polish the game. As initially stated in July, this extra period aims to deliver the “finest possible experience” to players. He also mentioned the team’s intention to prevent Danganronpa 2×2 from launching alongside “a specific high-profile title” expected soon.
When questioned about whether that title was Grand Theft Auto VI, Kodaka chuckled and added:
“I wouldn’t have time to work on the game while playing Grand Theft Auto VI, so moving the release date was unavoidable.”

As the development of Danganronpa 2×2 continues, it’s clear that at least one member of the team—the series’ own creator—will be fully immersed in Rockstar Games’ upcoming open-world adventure upon its release.
Danganronpa 2×2 is slated for a 2027 launch on PC (Steam, Epic Games Store), Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
