My Dress-Up Darling faces censorship: New Zealand gives it R18 rating

New Zealand authorities deemed this romantic comedy adult content.

Western culture again shows its complete misunderstanding of otaku culture. The New Zealand government has dealt a harsh blow to one of the industry’s most beloved works, after it was confirmed that the successful romantic comedy My Dress-Up Darling (known in Japan as Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru) officially received an R18 adult rating in the country. Authorities determined that the constant fanservice and suggestive scenes related to costume making are sufficient reasons to place this harmless school story in the same restrictive category as pornographic material or productions with extreme violence.

As expected, this firm decision caused a massive headache within the community. Thousands of fans expressed immense frustration on social media seeing Western countries persist in treating anime as a problematic medium that needs regulation or censorship under their own moral standards. While some veteran fans blamed new generations for introducing a puritanical mindset to the fandom, others simply noted that countries like New Zealand and Australia have always had absurdly strict records when evaluating Asian entertainment.

Japan reacts with a mix of surprise and resignation

Interestingly, the response from Japan was more analytical and divided. Although several viewers regretted that foreign youth interested in fashion design and cosplay would miss out on this animated gem, others accepted that cultural clashes are inevitable. Several Japanese users pointed out that, if we analyze the work objectively, dialogues involving erotic games and mishap visits to love hotels do justify certain restrictions, acknowledging that even in their home country, themes related to doujinshi circles often carry a mature audience image.

With Western governments likely to continue evaluating these stories under their own strict moral lenses, do you think animation studios should start self-censoring to avoid these blocks, or simply ignore the absurd demands from this side of the world?
