With Nippon Ichi Software (NIS) increasingly centering its efforts on creating more internal projects, a fresh title has been unveiled to its lineup: Village in the Shade, a farming simulator slated for fall 2026. Although initially marketed as a lighthearted, cozy experience, unsettling clues in promotional materials and an unsettling 15+ rating hint that the narrative may take a darker turn, echoing the studio’s 2015 survival horror Yomawari: Night Alone.
In response to some (understandably) raised eyebrows over Village in the Shade, the game’s official X account recently issued a public statement clarifying that dogs and cats remain unharmed within the game. While this might strike some as an odd announcement, longtime followers of Nippon Ichi Software seem relieved that the title won’t force them to revisit their past experiences. Those familiar with the Yomawari series likely recognize the “event” the X post alludes to.
Please note that the following paragraph contains spoilers for the initial segment of Yomawari: Night Alone.
The opening scene of Yomawari: Night Alone introduces the main character and her dog Poro as they enjoy a night walk along a rural road. As part of the game’s “tutorial” phase teaching inventory management, players are instructed to pick up a small stone. Subsequently, the game prompts you to throw it. Poro chases the tossed stone, oblivious to an oncoming truck. The ensuing sequence is notably graphic and violent.
Many are relieved that such disturbing moments (naturally) won’t appear in Village in the Shade, which positions itself as a “definitely-not-horror-cute-cozy-game.” However, some X users are humorously cautioning not to take the announcement’s wording at face value. While dogs and cats are safe, what about other creatures…or people?
For those sensitive to frightening content or wishing to avoid any in-game fatalities, Village in the Shade includes a Peaceful Life Mode. This feature allows players to immerse themselves in village life without concerns about sinister occurrences during their absence.
Village in the Shade is scheduled for release in fall 2026 on PC (Steam), PS5, and Nintendo Switch. The PC version will support English, French, Spanish, Japanese, Traditional Chinese, and Korean, whereas the console versions will offer English, French, and Spanish.
