During a conversation with Famitsu, Sega chief Shuji Utsumi elaborated on the company’s approach to game distribution. While Sega considers digital distribution essential for enhancing the performance of its premium titles on PC and consoles, physical copies will remain a significant element of its identity.

Utsumi explained that the growing PC gaming community is a key factor behind Sega’s move toward a more digital-first strategy. Even in areas where consoles lack popularity, enthusiasts can still enjoy games via their computers. Sega intends to bolster its digital platform to reach these markets, aligning with its ambition to become a more “digitally-aware and worldwide-oriented business.” Notably, Utsumi pointed out that Sega’s internal culture historically favors a “physical-first approach,” making this shift a deliberate effort.

Moreover, Sega experienced a challenging year in 2025. Games that were expected to be major hits fell short of their sales projections (Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, for instance, missed its sales marks despite positive feedback from critics). In response to these outcomes, Sega is planning initiatives designed to boost the sales of its titles.

Yet, Utsumi emphasized that, as a company with console roots, Sega still respects physical media and is striving for a distribution system that lets it embrace digital options without sacrificing the traditional format.
