Ghost Projects: Three Anime Sequels Announced Years Ago That We’re Still Waiting For

While the recent announcement of the second season of Saga of Tanya the Evil restored our hope, several highly anticipated productions remain in a complete information void.

We’ve all felt that immense excitement when a studio confirms the continuation of our favorite series. However, that initial joy can quickly turn to frustration when years pass and production teams share no new sketches. Although the recent announcement that Youjo Senki II will finally premiere in July 2026 showed that patience sometimes pays off, the reality is that the industry is full of anime projects that were announced with great fanfare only to mysteriously disappear from viewers’ radar, leaving thousands of fans in total uncertainty.

Ufotable’s Long Silence and Gainax’s Crisis

One of the most obvious cases is the anticipated cinematic adaptation of Katsugeki Touken Ranbu. When the TV series ended in 2017, an immediate promotional video promised a film that would continue the story. Nine years later, information remains completely absent. Although studio Ufotable briefly included this title in a future projects video in February 2026, no real release window exists yet.

Meanwhile, the situation with Top o Nerae 3 is even more concerning. This continuation of the classic series from the late ’80s was announced with great enthusiasm in September 2018, but after the widely publicized bankruptcy of studio Gainax last year, the survival of this work is a complete mystery, and many fear the project was quietly shelved.

The Long Wait for Chisato and Takina’s Return

Desperation isn’t limited to older franchises. In summer 2022, Lycoris Recoil became a massive success and sales phenomenon thanks to its incredible protagonist dynamic. Capitalizing on its momentum, the production team held a special event in February 2023 to confirm a new animated project was in development. The problem is that since then, details about the format or central story are completely absent. Although the shorts series Lycoris Recoil Friends are thieves of time aired in April 2025, fans know this was a side project, meaning the main production remains stalled in the creative process.

The only advantage of this corporate silence is that, without an official cancellation, the hope of seeing these productions realized remains alive. Knowing that scheduling issues and internal studio changes often severely delay modern productions, which of these long-awaited anime sequels do you most hope will finally be completed, or do you think we should accept that after all this time they may never reach our screens?
