Approximately a week ago, an indie developer crafting the social deduction multiplayer game Red Flag shared on the IndieDev subreddit about their recent positive encounter with Valve’s Steam Support. Having mistakenly submitted a non-functional build on the deadline day, they discovered that rather than demanding corrections or denying the game, the approval team fixed the issues themselves, ensuring the game was ready for Steam’s June Next Fest.

The developer explained that the Red Flag Team uploaded its demo build on the Next Fest deadline day, only to recall that the typical approval timeline spans five to seven days. This meant that unless the game was approved immediately, it would miss out on a key opportunity to gain visibility on the platform. Upon realizing their oversight and sending a follow-up email, they were informed that the game would undergo expedited review.

Although the build was approved within a few hours, Valve identified that the game had initially failed to launch due to a misconfiguration of the Visual C++ Redistributable files necessary for gameplay.

Rather than rejecting the build or returning it to the developers for repairs (a functional build is a standard part of the review process), the reviewer opted to personally adjust the configuration and resolve the redistributable issues before granting approval.

In response to the Reddit post, numerous indie developers chimed in with similar accounts of Valve addressing redistributable errors on their titles to meet deadlines. It seems this is a frequent blunder among first-time Steam publishers, and the review team has become adept at resolving such issues without altering the core build.

Thanks to Valve’s intervention, Red Flag’s demo successfully participated in the June Next Fest, resulting in nearly double the Steam Wishlists and an active player lobby for the developers.

Red Flag is scheduled to enter Early Access on July 14 for Windows (Steam). A complimentary demo is also available for download.
