The Bleach author reveals why he struggled to draw his heroines
The creator of the successful franchise admitted his biggest artistic challenge.
Legendary mangaka Tite Kubo has never minced words when interacting with fans, and this time he shared a candid and entertaining confession. During a recent Q&A session, the author behind the hugely popular franchise Bleach openly admitted the greatest and most frustrating technical challenge of his career: learning to draw voluptuous female proportions correctly.

While now globally recognized for the impeccable and stylized character designs of heroines like Rangiku Matsumoto, Orihime Inoue, and Nelliel Tu Odelschwanck, the truth is that the author struggled greatly in his early days. Kubo explained that when he first started illustrating, he preferred drawing girls with much smaller and flatter figures simply because they were easier to handle on paper. However, his artistic perfectionism forced him to practice obsessively and non-stop until he mastered the anatomy of large breasts, acknowledging that this visual element caused him the most headaches and frustrations at the drawing board.

All that hard work on paper definitely shaped his current tastes in a fairly humorous way. True to his irreverent personality, the author concluded his confession by stating that today he chooses his favorite girls based purely on their curves. The more voluptuous a heroine is, the higher she ranks on his coveted personal favorites list, proving that all his hard work and practice was absolutely worth it.
Given the incredible level of detail and the distinct visual style the author managed to infuse into each woman in his work, do you think modern artists should strive to master all types of anatomical proportions instead of staying stuck in their comfort zone?
