May 25, 2026
If you were left wanting to see this promising historical drama in the spring season due to its sudden delay, you can breathe easy. The production committee of the anime adaptation of Though I Am an Inept Villainess (known by purists as Futsutsuka na Akujo de wa Gozaimasu ga) has just confirmed that the series will officially land on Japanese television on July 12. To celebrate the project still being afloat and compensate fans for the wait, they released an impressive promotional image showing the protagonists ready to face the deadly conspiracies of the palace.

A top-tier cast to survive court betrayals
To bring this tense atmosphere of imperial intrigue, body swaps, and maids fighting for the crown to life, studio Doga Kobo assembled a recording booth with talents who know exactly how to convey intense emotions. The main lineup leading this tangled plot includes:
- Manaka Iwami as Kou Reirin.World-renowned for voicing Akane Kurokawa in Oshi no Ko and Tohru Honda in Fruits Basket.
- Natsumi Kawaida as Shu Keigetsu. An up-and-coming talent, remembered for her role as Asami Yuuki in Higehiro.
- Makoto Furukawa as Ei Gyomei. The legend behind the very own Saitama in One Punch Man and Miyuki Shirogane in Kaguya-sama: Love is War.
- Yuichiro Umehara as Shin-u.Recognized in otaku culture for being the unmistakable voice of Goblin Slayer.
- Hana Hishikawa as Riirii.Who lent her voice to Yui Nagomi in Delicious Party Precure.
- Farahnaz Nikray as Ko Tosetsu. An emerging actress who will add depth to the complex court ranks.
As many will recall, this anime was originally scheduled to release in April, but the production team decided to postpone it to ensure the visual quality met market demands. And indeed, it was worth the wait, considering we have Mitsue Yamazaki (the mastermind behind comedy gems like Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun) in the director’s chair, while the beautiful character designs are handled by Ai Kikuchi (known for her excellent work in Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie and New Game!). With this team on board, we can expect the imperial palace and period costumes to look simply incredible.
Synopsis of Though I Am an Inept Villainess
The story transports us to a fictional kingdom heavily inspired by ancient China, where the five most powerful clans in the country send their best maids to compete for the prestigious position of imperial consort. Kou Reirin, known as the fragile and beautiful “butterfly” of the court, is the perfect candidate and seems destined to marry the crown prince. However, during the dazzling Lantern Festival, she suffers a surprising attack by Shu Keigetsu, an outcast girl nicknamed the “rat of the court,” triggering a mysterious and irreversible body swap. Now trapped in her attacker’s body and facing the threat of execution for treason, Reirin discovers that this new physique is much stronger and resilient than her own, allowing her to navigate the deadly dangers of palace life with a brazen attitude no one expected.
Will you give this body-swap story a chance, or do you feel palace intrigues no longer surprise you?
