The Dragon Quest franchise marked its 40th anniversary on May 27, bringing forth a wave of commemorative announcements and releases, including an array of anniversary merchandise.

Among these offerings is a meticulously crafted music box that plays the legendary Dragon Quest Overture theme, originally composed by the late Koichi Sugiyama and featured in every Dragon Quest game since the series’ debut. The item’s price tag was set at 132,000 yen, roughly equivalent to $820 USD. Pre-orders for this exclusive piece began in the afternoon of June 3, and were fully claimed by the next morning, as noted by MagMix

While some fans in Japan expressed surprise at the high cost, with one commenter suggesting it was about ten times the typical price for such a collectible, the majority of reactions were highly favorable. Each music box is reportedly handcrafted by Japanese artisans using premium walnut wood, making it a top-tier collector’s item for devoted fans.

This 50-note music box will measure about 8 inches wide, 5 inches long, and 3 inches deep, with the musical piece lasting approximately 1 minute and 52 seconds. Pre-orders are slated to ship by February 28, 2027.

Fans who missed out on or declined to purchase this luxury item can still enjoy the 40th anniversary celebration, as Square Enix continues to offer a wide selection of anniversary merchandise on their website, including plush toys, figures, keychains, and other collectibles at more budget-friendly prices.

Meanwhile, the Dragon Quest game series itself is poised for an exciting future, highlighted by the recent trailer for Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams and the announcement of a new spin-off, Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World. Although release dates for these titles remain unannounced, fans are hopeful they won’t have to wait much longer for their next Dragon Quest adventure.
