The web novel and light novel haven’t been updated since 2023, right when the anime faced heavy criticism.

Sometimes a bad anime not only disappoints fans at the time but also leaves a permanent mark on the original material. This is what many followers of The Dreaming Boy Is a Realist (Yumemiru Danshi wa Genjitsushugisha) believe happened: both the web novel and the light novel haven’t received any updates since 2023, the year their anime adaptation faced a wave of criticism.

The adaptation, produced by Studio Gokumi and AXsiZ, premiered in July 2023 and faced harsh criticism from the first episode for its animation quality, with some viewers even suspecting AI use in certain scenes. Notable issues included a scene where the protagonist changes hair color with barely visible difference, an opening too similar to other series, and a final credits error with a seiyuu’s name.

The anime concluded in September 2023 after twelve episodes. Shortly after, both the web novel and light novel stopped updating. The last light novel volume, the eighth, released in April 2023, just before the anime’s premiere. The web novel’s last update was in August of that year, leaving the story unfinished.

Japanese fans following the original novel have expressed disappointment and sadness, describing the base story as enjoyable and well-written. Many believe the adaptation’s negative reception may have discouraged the author from continuing, noting that the anime cut important character moments and changed the tone in a way that made it less appealing than the original material.

The series had built significant momentum beforehand: it had an active manga adaptation since 2021 and generated local anticipation for its setting in Hamamatsu, with hopes of boosting the area’s tourism. The anime’s production issues ultimately overshadowed these expectations.

About Yumemiru Danshi wa Genjitsushugisha

The Dreaming Boy Is a Realist is a story by Okemaru that began as a web novel in 2018 before being published as a light novel starting in 2020. It follows Wataru Sajou, a high school student known for repeatedly confessing his love to Aika Natsukawa. When he realizes his feelings aren’t reciprocated, he decides to stop pursuing her and live more calmly, which paradoxically makes Aika start pursuing him. No new volumes or chapters have been published since 2023, and there are no official announcements about the original story’s future.

Do you think a poor anime adaptation can truly discourage an author to the point of abandoning their story, or do you believe other factors are behind such prolonged pauses?
