The mahjong manga Gokigenyo, Ikkyoku Ikaga? will get an anime adaptation
Felix Film and Stardust Telepath’s director animate the most cozy mahjong manga currently.
Mahjong doesn’t need to be competitive to be the focus of an adorable story. Gokigenyo, Ikkyoku Ikaga? (Good Day to You, How About a Game?) confirmed its anime adaptation on June 25, the same day its fifth compiled volume hit stores. The announcement came with a commemorative illustration by author Tsukasa Unohana, marking the moment her 4-panel manga about mahjong and friendship at an elite school jumps to the screen.

Director Kaori, known for her work in Stardust Telepath, is helming the project, setting expectations for a heartwarming girls’ relationships anime. Screenwriter Kazuyuki Fudeyasu, with experience in series like Is the Order a Rabbit?, is handling the series composition, while character designer Mai Otsuka, known for The Demon Girl Next Door, is designing the characters. Production is by Felix Film. No release date has been confirmed yet.
The story follows Sae, a girl struggling to fit in at her elite girls’ school. The turning point comes when the refined and popular Chise catches her playing mahjong on her phone, and from that encounter, a connection grows between them through the game. This premise fits perfectly in the 4-koma manga universe: a daily excuse that becomes the thread building a friendship.

About Gokigenyo, Ikkyoku Ikaga?
Gokigenyo, Ikkyoku Ikaga? is a 4-panel manga by Tsukasa Unohana that started in June 2022 in a magazine focused on light and slice-of-life stories. It has five compiled volumes at the time of the announcement. The story blends the elegant atmosphere of a private girls’ school with the warmth of two girls bonding through mahjong, a game that serves more as a pretext to get to know each other than as competition.
Does mahjong as the central element of a friendship story seem like an original hook to you, or do you need to see more of the anime before deciding?
