Game development studio KADATH, led by veteran producer Yoichi Miyaji (known for his work on the Lunar and Grandia series), has unveiled their inaugural project, Under Mythos. Set for a 2028 launch, this 2D dark fantasy JRPG follows a lost feline working at an enigmatic hot spring. As the game progresses, the tranquil slice-of-life narrative transforms into a cosmic horror tale, with the world itself spiraling into madness.
During a recent sit-down with 4Gamer, Miyaji discussed the game’s themes and the inspiration behind its unique cosmic horror direction.
Miyaji explains that Under Mythos is built around the concept of the world existing within the consciousness of Azathoth, a deity from the Cthulhu mythos. He has further infused his personal interpretations into the narrative.
Miyaji’s interest in quantum cosmology and the link between human consciousness and the universe also influenced the game. He explores the notion that the universe itself possesses a consciousness, possibly the source of human awareness, linking this to Azathoth’s story. Additionally, elements from H. P. Lovecraft’s 1931 novella “At the Mountains of Madness,” such as the Elder Things and Shoggoths, are integral to Under Mythos.
In Lovecraft’s work, Shoggoths were created as servants to the Elder Things but developed independent minds and rebelled. Miyaji draws parallels to this with the growing public concern over AI, another theme he aims to address. The idea of creations intended for human benefit eventually becoming uncontrollable is central to this theme.
“There’s a palpable anxiety about AI’s future, and I want to capture those fears people are experiencing today,” Miyaji remarks.
While many story details remain confidential, Miyaji hints that even the game’s hot spring inn will tie into the Cthulhu Mythos, though not everything will be spelled out for players. This approach is likely meant to evoke a sense of an “overwhelming presence” lurking beneath the surface. Under Mythos is slated for a 2028 release, so patience will be required for fans eager to explore its narrative. Based on current information, it promises to be a compelling experience for fans of the Cthulhu Mythos and cosmic horror enthusiasts.
Under Mythos will launch on PC (Steam) and Nintendo Switch in 2028.
