The manga Getting Shots on a Frying Pan will get an anime adaptation by J.C. Staff in 2027

J.C. Staff is animating the manga where a man travels the world in search of dangerous dishes… as a girl.

The author of this manga publicly apologized to Japanese readers upon confirming that his work would be adapted into an anime. This should give you all the information needed about what kind of project Getting Shots on Frying Pan (Nabetama) is. J.C. Staff will animate the culinary and travel chronicles of Juntaro Aoki and Shin Moriyama, with a scheduled release in 2027. The announcement came with a teaser visual whose official tagline reads: “A beautiful girl (elderly man) begins a wild culinary journey around the world.”

The story follows Juntaro, depicted in the manga as a beautiful girl despite being the author himself, as he travels to dangerous places worldwide in search of strange yet irresistible dishes that no one else would dare to try. His goal is to reach 50,000 points of deliciousness in his quest for unique culinary experiences. The series blends real travel reporting with comedy and gastronomic elements, following the real adventures of the author, an angling enthusiast who seeks little-known dishes around the planet.

In his message after the anime announcement, Aoki was completely honest about the project’s nature: “Probably, this is one of the craziest manga that exist. Welcome to this wild era of Japan, where a manga like this is being animated. I don’t think there has ever been an anime where I’m so excited to see the reaction overseas.” He then added, addressing Japanese readers: “Thanks… and I’m sorry.” The parentheses explain that certain expressions can only be written in Japanese due to language restrictions, making English convenient. Whether that makes sense or not is part of the charm.

Getting Shots on Flying Pan (Nabetama) is a manga by Juntaro Aoki and Shin Moriyama that launched in 2021 on a web manga platform and has five compiled volumes by 2024. The series appeared in the top 20 of the manga ranking for male readers in Kono Manga ga Sugoi! for 2023, confirming that its unique chaos has resonated with a real audience. J.C. Staff’s adaptation will be the first time its blend of travel, gastronomy, and completely out-of-control humor hits the screen.

Does the concept of the author traveling as a “beautiful girl” in search of the world’s most dangerous food seem like the kind of anime you need to watch without knowing too much beforehand, or do you prefer more context before diving in?
