Square Enix’s Octopath Traveler franchise marked its 8-year anniversary in July. In a special interview with Dengeki Online, key members of the series’ development team, including producer Tomoya Asano, recently discussed the future of Octopath Traveler.
With the 8-year mark now behind them and the 10-year milestone approaching, Asano acknowledges that excitement for a potential “Octopath Traveler III” is at an all-time high. He expresses empathy for this anticipation but admits he cannot provide any details at this time. “We truly sense [fans’ enthusiasm], and that’s what I wanted to share,” he notes.
Asano further explains that due to the significant growth of the HD-2D art style and the impressive sales of Octopath Traveler—exceeding 7 million copies—his team feels a strong responsibility to deliver only their best work. The developers are united in the belief that “if we’re going to proceed, we’ll aim for the stars,” hinting that any future installment could be even more expansive in scope or concept. They encourage fans to “stay tuned for what’s next.”
Additionally, the team expressed interest in exploring other media adaptations of the Octopath Traveler universe, such as novels and a TRPG version, and are open to hearing fan suggestions for these projects.
