Although the positive “interim” poll results from last month had hinted at its inclusion, it’s now confirmed that the mechanic is being developed and will be ready before launch.
Atelier Karia represents the latest installment in the enduring alchemy-focused Atelier JRPG franchise, slated for release on February 25 across Steam, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. The game’s protagonist, Karia, possesses a remarkable talent for consuming virtually anything—from everyday food to crafting materials, and even weapons and explosives. The items Karia ingests during her adventures and battles can alter both her visual appearance and combat capabilities, with the game offering over 100 potential transformations tied to her diet.
Since eating is a central gameplay element, the developers of Atelier Karia sought feedback on whether players would appreciate the option for Karia to adopt a more “full-bodied” appearance after indulging in large quantities of food. This inquiry led to the viral user poll conducted last month.
In the latest interview, producer Junzo Hosoi and director Daiki Fukui expressed surprise at the overwhelming enthusiasm for the feature, noting that nearly 75% of fans strongly supported its implementation. Among English-speaking participants, the approval rate was even higher at 90%. The survey spanned Asia, North America, and Europe, with Hosoi noting that all regions favored the new mechanic, though North America showed the most fervent response.
Fukui added that the development team had prepared for various outcomes before launching the survey and had already made arrangements for implementation. While he didn’t explicitly confirm a final decision on Karia’s body shape changes, his remarks suggest that the feature is actively being developed, with the team working diligently. Fukui emphasized that although the task is challenging, it won’t significantly delay the game’s production timeline, urging fans not to worry.
Notably, the interim survey results revealed that among those who favored including body shape changes, 62% wanted the ability to lock Karia into their preferred form, while 32% preferred spontaneous transformations based on her food intake. The developers have yet to announce their decision on this matter, so further details may follow.
