Guilherme “rdein” Martins, the creative mind behind Momodora, has recently unveiled Bombservice’s upcoming project, Record of Dorathia. This turn-based dungeon crawler RPG centers around the magi, a group of twelve fate weavers who were briefly referenced in Momodora: Moonlit Farewell.

Crafted by the same four-person team that brought Momodora II to life, Record of Dorathia tasks players with leading a party that is mysteriously transported to a place called the Observatory. The magi Monna summons the party, forging a covenant with them to locate the missing soul of her sister, Alma.

The game’s combat system is turn-based, with many actions having a limited number of uses. Record of Dorathia emphasizes the use of status effects, which are numerous, and winning battles requires players to exploit enemy vulnerabilities while managing buffs and debuffs.

Boss encounters are also influenced by status effects, ensuring that strategies developed against lesser foes remain relevant. For instance, while the Sleep spell guarantees a critical hit against weaker enemies, its effect on bosses is the Drowsy status, which diminishes their attack power and agility for a set duration.

Rdein is also introducing a “Willpower” mechanic. Players accumulate one stack of Willpower by landing critical hits, targeting enemy weaknesses, and achieving kills. Accumulating three stacks allows the next action to be enhanced without consuming one of its uses. This mechanic applies not only to offensive moves but also to support actions like healing and reviving fallen allies.

The party system includes four active characters and eight distinct classes. The Dark Knight and Oathkeeper serve as tanks, the Cleric and Oracle provide healing and support, while the Blademaster, Monk, Hunter, and Witch form the core attacker roles. Each class offers a unique playstyle, and players can customize the color schemes of their party members.

Record of Dorathia draws inspiration from “choose your own adventure” books and originated as a digital gamebook experiment by rdein in 2019. It later evolved into a tabletop RPG concept before being shelved. After the release of Momodora: Moonlit Farewell in 2024, rdein refocused his efforts on developing Record of Dorathia into its current form.

Rdein acknowledges that transitioning from Momodora to an RPG has presented significant challenges. While simple mechanics like jumping in Momodora could be coded in a day, Record of Dorathia required extensive development time to achieve the desired gameplay feel. He cites the Chrono series, Final Fantasy, Etrian Odyssey, and Pokémon Gold/Silver as key influences for the game.

Record of Dorathia is currently in development and will not utilize any AI. A trailer and Steam page are scheduled for release soon. Fans can stay updated on the game’s progress through rdein’s X or Bluesky profiles.
