If you ever dreamed of leaving office stress for a quiet life with broken powers in another world, this news is for you. On Wednesday, April 22, publisher Kadokawa officially confirmed that the successful light novel written by Yasukiyo Kotobuki, The Diary of a Middle-Aged Sage’s Carefree Life in Another World (Arafo Kenja no Isekai Seikatsu Nikki), will receive its long-awaited animated adaptation for television. The announcement came with a first promotional image and confirmation of the main team that will bring this project to life at studio YANCHESTER.

Veteran team in charge of animation

Since no release window or voice cast has been revealed, the production committee focused attention on technical talent. The project has been handed over to creatives with extensive experience in handling comedies, fantasy settings, and relaxed narrative pacing. Here are the staff leaders:

  • Takayuki Inagaki as general director.

Known for his work directing the iconic supernatural comedy Rosario + Vampire.

  • Hiroko Kanasugi in charge of series composition.

Skilled at maintaining a slow pace after scripting the adaptation of Drug Store in Another World – The Slow Life of a Cheat Pharmacist.

  • Mariko Fujita as character designer.

Responsible for the memorable and stylish designs in the Galaxy Angel franchise.

From Shosetsuka ni Naro to an expanding universe

The rise of this isekai franchise is a true example of persistence in the industry. Its story began in 2016 as a simple web novel on the popular site Shosetsuka ni Naro. Since then, it has grown steadily. Volume 20 of the printed novel was released in February, and volume 21 will hit stores this Friday, April 24.

In addition to its two regular manga adaptations (drawn by artists Maneki and 888 on Manga UP! and ComicWalker platforms respectively), the series added a spin-off prequel manga in December titled Zero Sword and Sorceress World. This work, illustrated by Piyoko Hatori, explores the protagonist’s early years, demonstrating the solid interest of the public in continuing to expand this universe.

About the sage Zelos Merlin’s new life

The story presents an office worker whose monotonous and exhausting reality changes drastically when he is transported to a new fantasy world. However, he doesn’t arrive there empty-handed or as a novice: he reincarnates as the all-powerful Zelos Merlin, the same overpowered avatar he used in his favorite video game.

Instead of seeking epic conflicts, joining the royal army, or trying to save the world from a Demon King, our protagonist takes a very different path. He decides to use his immense magical powers to ensure something he never had in the real world: a completely free, relaxed, and worry-free existence in an unknown world.
