Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO announces a new prequel film

If you thought Bandai Namco would give you a break after the 2024 box office hit, you picked the wrong franchise. During the Gundam Conference SPRING 2026 held on May 15, executives announced a bombshell for the otaku fanbase of mechas: the production of a new animated film titled Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO, which will serve as a direct prequel to the record-breaking film from last year.

What makes this news a true nostalgic gem isn’t just more Cosmic Era content. This new installment is built on a scenario written during the initial planning stages by director Shigeru Morita and the late legendary series composer Chiaki Morosawa. Essentially, we have a work that will respect 100% of the original creators’ vision. Although the event only gave us a video teaser to build excitement, it was made clear that heavy plot details and the cast will be revealed in the coming months.

Synopsis of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO

As a prequel film, the plot will be set chronologically just before the explosive events seen in the successful film Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM (originally released in January 2024 in Japan). The story promises to fill narrative gaps and explore political conflicts, human drama, and tense relationships among the key characters of the Cosmic Era. Through this journey to the recent past of the SEED timeline, viewers will discover the exact triggers and secret machinations that ultimately dragged the protagonists into the brutal war we witnessed on the big screen.

Are you ready for this prequel, or are you already afraid of how many new Gunplas you’ll end up buying because of the movie?
