Ascendance of a Bookworm to adapt its fourth novel arc to anime

Wit Studio to again handle animation for Rozemyne’s Royal Academy journey.

Rozemyne’s insatiable reading desire continues to pay off on screen. Just as the third part of its animated adaptation finished airing, the production team surprised fans with great news: the story will officially continue on TV by adapting the fourth arc of the work, known as The Self-Proclaimed Custom of the Royal Academy Library Committee.

The news came after the conclusion of the episode block that started in April, which aired consecutively over two quarters to cover Rozemyne’s time as an adopted archduke’s daughter. To the community’s delight, Wit Studio will again serve as the animation studio for this new phase, ensuring the visual quality that accompanied the project in its recent releases.

The announcement solidifies the project’s presence on Japanese television, reminding viewers that the franchise debuted originally in October 2019, continued with a second season in April 2020, and aired its third installment in April 2022. With this new project, our favorite bookworm’s adventure prepares to explore a completely new environment within the military and magical academy.

Voice cast and production team

The main cast retains Yuka Iguchi as Rozemyne and Show Hayami as Ferdinand. During the recent season, the series added notable figures to its voice cast, featuring Yukari Tamura as Georgine, Mami Koyama as Veronica, Minami Takayama as Florencia, Kazuhiro Yamaji as Bonifatius, Nao Toyama as Angelica, Asami Seto as Brigitte, and Katsumi Fukuhara voicing Zack.

Technically, the latest season’s direction was handled by Yoshiaki Iwasaki at Wit Studio, taking the helm from Mitsuru Hongo. Script supervision continued under Mariko Kunisawa, while Aiko Minowa took charge of character design. Composer MICHIRU returned to create the soundtrack accompanying the protagonist’s journey.

About Ascendance of a Bookworm

Ascendance of a Bookworm (Honzuki no Gekokujou) is a fantasy light novel series written by Miya Kazuki and illustrated by You Shiina. The story originated on the Shosetsuka ni Naro portal in 2013 and concluded its web publication in 2017, while the compiled print edition wrapped up its main arc in December 2023 with volume 33, exceeding 13 million copies in circulation.

The plot follows Urano Motosu, a university student passionate about reading who dies crushed by a book avalanche during an earthquake just before achieving her dream of becoming a librarian. After her death, she is reborn in a medieval fantasy world as Myne, a frail young girl from a humble family. Upon discovering that books are a luxury exclusive to nobility and nearly impossible for commoners to obtain, she resolves to use her modern-world knowledge to manufacture her own paper and write her own texts at all costs.
