Square Enix recently revealed that Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the eagerly awaited conclusion to the remake trilogy, is set to arrive in the spring of 2027. Building upon the foundation of FFVII Rebirth, this latest installment will place a heightened and intentional focus on player choices, influencing both the sequence of gameplay progression and the narrative journey itself. While FFVII Revelation will feature a single definitive ending, it will incorporate ample branching content to ensure that no single playthrough is identical, and mastering all the game has to offer will require multiple experiences, as confirmed by series director Naoki Hamaguchi in a recent statement.
Intriguingly, during a fresh interview with 4Gamer, Hamaguchi expressed that he views expanded player agency and the possibility for personalized playthroughs as essential attributes that modern games should provide, linking this to the widespread popularity of game streaming. “One challenge RPGs like Final Fantasy face today is the risk that players might simply watch a stream and feel content without ever engaging with the game themselves. This poses a significant issue for the creative effort, or rather, it’s not something developers can genuinely celebrate,” he remarked.

Hamaguchi explicitly states that he does not intend to discredit streaming, but notes that if a game’s appeal is confined to its story progression, players might opt to simply watch content creators play instead, which can ultimately limit the game’s audience. He suggests, “if viewers watch a stream and it sparks thoughts like What would I do in that scenario? or How would I approach that?, then hopefully they’ll be motivated to experience it firsthand.” Believing that entertainment must evolve alongside current trends rather than adhering rigidly to past methods, Hamaguchi shares that he has been pushing himself in this direction throughout the development of FFVII Remake, Rebirth, and now Revelation.
On a related note, “Choices” is also one of the central conceptual themes of FFVII Revelation. In keeping with its role as the trilogy’s conclusion and the narrative that awaits the characters, the game will shift away from the sense of “stability” offered by FFVII Rebirth, placing players under “pressure” to make critical decisions.
Final Fantasy VII Revelation is scheduled to launch in Spring 2027 for PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox on PC), Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, and Xbox Series X❘S.
