A small vampire in the dungeon: Mercedes and the Waning Moon announces its anime for 2027

Studio Teddy will adapt this peculiar story of reincarnation and vampires in January 2027.

The isekai genre continues to explore the strangest combinations, and this time it brings us a protagonist who has everything against her. The production committee behind the light novel Kaketa Tsuki no Mercedes (known in English as Mercedes and the Waning Moon) has officially confirmed that this unusual story will make the leap to television with its own animated adaptation. To build excitement, they released a first trailer and a beautiful visual, revealing that the series will debut on Japanese screens during the January 2027 season.

The premise of this franchise is quite interesting. It puts us in the shoes of Mercedes Grunewald, a girl reincarnated as a vampire in a highly dysfunctional noble family. Upon discovering that her aristocratic father will disown her mother (a mere concubine) and leave them on the streets, our protagonist is forced to make a drastic decision. Leveraging the immense physical potential of her deadly lineage and the mental maturity of her past life, the girl decides to become a bloodthirsty dungeon explorer to support her small family, all while barely being old enough to be in kindergarten.

The team behind the project

To bring this tense underground survival journey to life, the project fell into the hands of studio Teddy, who appointed the experienced Kunihisa Sugishima as director. The scripts and story adaptation will be handled by Jun Kumagai, while Nami Shoyama will adapt the charming character designs. This wave of news delighted the original author Fire head and illustrator KeG, as the cast announcement coincided strategically with the release of the fifth volume of their novels and the sixth volume of their manga adaptation.

Cast

  • Anna Nagase as Mercedes Grunewald.

Given that the trend of putting characters with a childlike appearance into deadly dungeon battles remains incredibly profitable in Japan, do you think Western audiences will ever tire of this protagonist archetype, or will we continue consuming these stories for pure morbid curiosity and entertainment?
