Acacia, the inventive brand from Japanese game developer Re;AER, revealed on August 28 that their enigmatic visual novel Magical Girl Witch Trials has exceeded 700,000 total sales since its debut on July 18, 2025. The title is currently accessible on PC and Nintendo Switch, with the Steam iteration amassing over 29,000 global user reviews as of now, 96% of which are favorable, securing an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating on the platform.

For background, Magical Girl Witch Trials centers on Ema Sakuraba, a teenage girl who awakens confined in a prison estate alongside 12 other magically gifted girls who possess “the potential to become witches.” As their magical abilities intensify, their minds become consumed by murderous notions. With each killing, the girls are compelled to engage in a series of harsh witch trials aimed at identifying the “true witches” within their group. While the visual novel initially presents as a “dark magical girl” narrative similar to Puella Magi ☆ Madoka Magica and Magical Girl Raising Project, its gameplay mechanics are heavily influenced by the Danganronpa and Ace Attorney franchises.

At present, Magical Girl Witch Trial’s storefront indicates Japanese and Simplified Chinese as its supported languages. This may change in the future, as Acacia has announced plans to eventually release the game in English, French, Spanish, and Korean. In an X update on July 10, the development team stated their intention to implement these languages by the end of 2026. However, the global version’s release timeline might shift since this marks Re;AER’s inaugural in-house localization project. It remains unclear whether these updates will be included in the Switch editions.

Additionally, Acacia is currently crafting two separate projects with the same creative team. The first project is The Streamer’s Alt Account Labyrinth, an adventure RPG exploring the darker aspects of internet culture. The second title, Magical Girl Taboo Village (魔法少女ノ因習村), is a visual novel where a group of magical girls strive to flee a secluded village to avoid being utilized in a mysterious sacrificial ritual. This latter project is co-written by Acacia and Makoto Kedouin, the creator of the Corpse Party series. Both games are scheduled for Steam and Nintendo Switch release in 2026.

Magical Girl Witch Trials is currently available on PC (Steam) and Nintendo Switch. The game presently offers Japanese and Simplified Chinese language support, with a global version slated for late 2026.
