Studio Pierrot, the creative force behind beloved anime series such as Naruto, Bleach, and Tokyo Ghoul, launched their latest animated production Magical Sisters LuluttoLilly this April. This marks the sixth entry in the Pierrot Magical Girl Series, a revival coming 28 years after the studio’s previous magical girl anime, Fancy Lala. In a recent conversation with Oricon News, Yohei Fukui, an anime producer at Studio Pierrot, discussed how LuluttoLilly fits into the genre’s rich history and what sets it apart as a distinct Pierrot magical girl series.

With Magical Angel Creamy Mami as its standout title, Pierrot’s Magical Series played a pivotal role in shaping the genre during the 80s. As the magical girl genre has evolved over the years, incorporating intense battles, tragic narratives, and horror elements, LuluttoLilly consciously embraces the studio’s signature magical girl style while tailoring it for a contemporary audience.

According to Fukui, Studio Pierrot explored new creative avenues while adhering to the studio’s established rule of excluding battles from their magical girl productions. He also expressed hope that the new anime would offer a refreshing change from the high-paced media landscape of the 2020s. Notably, the project seemed to rejuvenate Studio Pierrot’s staff, who are accustomed to working on action-packed and battle-centric anime.

“Our company has produced many works like Naruto and Bleach that heavily feature battles, but this time, the producer in charge [of LuluttoLilly] felt, I’m so tired of battles (laughs). In today’s age of information overload, we believe there’s a demand for an anime with a gentle and calming atmosphere. Instead of a series that demands intense focus, we aimed for something you can enjoy casually while unwinding,” Fukui explained.
As the studio’s first new title in nearly three decades, Fukui acknowledged the significant pressure and expectations surrounding the project. “However, we were determined to showcase Pierrot’s magical girls once more, amidst the many magical girl series currently available.”
