Players seeking more rhythm-based challenges after wrapping up Rhythm Heaven Groove might want to check out Step Theater. Created by Japanese streamer P-P, who famously left his day job to fully dedicate himself to the project, and distributed by NB Games, this story-driven rhythm game sees its world and narrative unfold as you successfully sync your inputs with the music. A complimentary demo with two stages is now available on Steam.
The stages in Step Theater are presented as short animated films covering diverse themes and scenarios, from a tortoise and hare making mochi to a spooky vampire ballroom gathering. As you advance through each level, the visuals, soundtrack, and gameplay mechanics evolve and intensify, reflecting the story’s progression. While some levels stick to traditional rhythm-game aesthetics and controls, others borrow elements from different gaming genres, with one notably resembling a platformer.
The demo offers two playable stages: The Two Mochiya (featuring the tortoise and hare mentioned earlier) and The Apprentice Ghost (where a young ghost must time their frights to match their teacher’s countdowns). Both stages can be finished in approximately 20 minutes.
Initially scheduled for release this summer on Windows and macOS (Steam), Step Theater has been rescheduled for some time in 2026. The free demo remains accessible.
