The Pokémon Company has issued a declaration through the official Japanese section of the Pokémon TCG Trainers Website revealing that it’s mulling over the implementation of a comprehensive identity verification mechanism. This mechanism would utilize My Number Cards, which are Japan’s state-issued identification cards (also functioning as Social Security Number cards).

This initiative is part of the company’s drive to “ensure all customers receive equitable and secure access” to TCG-related merchandise and involvement in official gatherings, suggesting it’s likely another step against the widespread problem of Pokémon card price gouging and potentially a safeguard against fraudulent activities using “proxy players” at tournaments (which surfaced during the 2026 Pokémon Yokohama Champions League).

According to The Pokémon Company, the mechanism will pertain to preemptive product raffles, distribution of specific items on Pokémon Center Online, along with participation in chosen official competitions and events conducted within Japan.

Regarding its operation, the company plans to enable users to validate their Trainer Club profiles by scanning their My Number Cards via smartphone through an auxiliary service. It assures that it will not collect or retain individuals’ personal ID numbers during this process.

The verification mechanism is under consideration for rollout as soon as August 2026. Considering that it’s not yet mandatory to possess a My Number Card in Japan, the Pokémon Company advises users who lack one to initiate the application procedure promptly.
