Japanese game developer Tose has recently revealed its financial outcomes for the third quarter of the fiscal year concluding in August 2026. As per a GameBiz update, the firm experienced a notable drop across all profit indicators, with overall sales decreasing by 0.8% and operating profit falling by 44.8% compared to the previous year. This decline in earnings is largely credited to the termination of an undisclosed venture labeled in the report as a “large-scale development project for an international client.”

Tose (or Tose Software), for background, is a game studio that has earned the moniker “ghost developer” due to its infrequent acknowledgment on the titles it produces, typically functioning in the background as a contract developer. Since its establishment in 1979, the company has delivered major franchise installments for Nintendo, Square Enix, Capcom, Atlus and others. Its latest recognized endeavors include Tales of Graces f Remastered and Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake.

The terminated project, referred to internally as “Project D”, was initially halted as early as late February of this year at the request of the international client, causing development personnel to be unemployed from March onward. Moreover, revenue-sharing income, particularly in the first quarter, dropped short of the prior year’s figures, leading to an operating profit reduction of about 45%. Up to now, it remains uncertain whether “Project D” will recommence development.

Tose also disclosed that the company has not been compensated by the international client for the project’s suspension. In reaction, Tose is contemplating revisions to its contract terms moving forward, mandating a certain level of financial remuneration when development workflows are paused.

The firm is currently striving to utilize its idle development personnel by expediting the launch and acquisition of new ventures, as well as enhancing staff productivity by shifting tasks originally planned for outsourcing to internal development.

Tose now has five additional titles in its production pipeline. A new “Project E” was initiated in the second quarter, accompanied by an order for “Project F” in the third quarter from a separate client. Both enigmatic projects are described as being multiplatform and in the planning/launch stage, with full revenue contributions projected from the fiscal year ending August 2027 onward.
