A VTuber spends $27,000 on her model and sparks debate
Kamo illustrated the $27,000 avatar while Cypurrpunk handled the rigging.
Investing a fortune in a digital image to stand out in the virtual content scene always causes a stir, but when the amount approaches the price of a new car, the topic becomes a must-discuss. Virtual creator Nuki, known in her streams as K9nuki, became the center of attention after revealing that her official Live2D model cost a total of $27,000, clarifying her followers’ doubts about how that budget was distributed.
After streaming for nearly two years on VRChat with adult-content-focused avatars, Nuki decided to make the definitive leap to Live2D in April 2026. To achieve the exact aesthetic she sought, the creator saved for months intending to hire illustrator Kamo, responsible for designing major figures in the medium like Ironmouse and Cottontail, which is why she affectionately refers to them as her model sisters.
The amount drew attention for far exceeding the average cost of an initial debut, but rigger Cypurrpunk stepped in to clarify how the work was divided. The rigging process accounted for less than $3,000 of the total, covering advanced body movement, five arm poses, tail swapping, tilt mechanics, a function to pull on a strap, 12 facial expressions, and 15 additional options. The rest of the budget covered illustration work and various production elements.

Despite the massive investment, the creator admitted she is still adjusting facial tracking parameters, especially in the mouth area, after receiving comments pointing out somewhat limited movements in her early streams. Nuki acknowledged that setting up a Live2D avatar proved to be a much more complex process than she anticipated compared to her VRChat experience, so she continues refining every technical detail to deliver the best possible visual quality.

VTubers (or virtual content creators) are streamers and YouTubers who use 2D or 3D animated avatars via facial and body tracking technology to interact with audiences in real time. Although the culture started with simple models, the industry has evolved into highly complex productions where renowned artists illustrate and articulate every movement to bring unique characters to life.
